This concert showcases a pair of Number 2’s: the second of six symphonies by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the second of four piano concertos by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Though both composers are Russian, their music leans West in its structure, harmonies, and style. For Tchaikovsky, he used Russian melodies within these Beethoven-like symphonic structures. And for Rachmaninoff, it was his gorgeous singable melodies superimposed on the highest level of technical demands of the solo pianist. We are so lucky to welcome Svetlana Smolina who has already performed numerous times in Wenatchee as part of the Community Concert Association.
